MEET THE TEAM
MATTHEW CLEERE Director
Matthew was a top academic scholar at Cheltenham College, before undertaking an MA in General Engineering at Trinity Hall College, Cambridge University. He specialised in control systems and electrical and electronic engineering and completed his degree in 1993.
He has a background in both mechanical and electrical design, as well as PLC, HMI and servo drive programming.
Throughout his career, Matthew has made use of his broad skillset in all aspects of machinery and automation design and has worked in a variety of industry sectors including Printing, Packaging, Automotive, Food and Pharmaceutical.
During his time at Matti Orion, as Design & Development Manager, he was responsible for the creation of the Multi-Function Processor, a modular paper
processing system for use in high-speed digital inkjet applications, which employed state-of-the-art servo control technology to provide previously unattainable flexibility and speed.
At CKF, as Design Manager he headed up the design effort necessary to deliver large-scale automation and robotics projects for customers such as Cadbury (Mondelēz), Nestlé, Ryvita, Weetabix, JLR, Eli Lilly.
Matthew joined Optimec in December 2019, bringing his experience in automation to help drive forward the further development of the is830-auto range.
DR. BEN COLDRICK Director
Ben Coldrick leads the technical development of Optimec Systems. His background is in vision systems, Optical Coherence Tomography, and biomedical engineering.
Ben completed his degree in Mechanical Engineering at Aston University in 2010, following that with a PhD in Biomedical Engineering. The aim of the PhD was to develop an FEA model of the human accommodation system, to improve the knowledge on the causes of Presbyopia. Alongside the principal PhD work, Ben also developed scientific testing rigs for the school of Ophthalmology, in addition to designing custom MatLab tools for processing OCT image data, with the tool in use today both in the UK and Australia.
The OCT work led Ben into working as part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between Aston University and Optimec Limited, with the aim of integrating OCT into a system for contact lens metrology.
The outcome of the KTP was the Optimec is830 system, launched in 2016, with Optimec also being awarded an Outstanding KTP award.
Since the conclusion of the KTP, Ben was the head of Technical Development at Optimec, continuing the development of the is830 system and launching the is830 Auto system for integration into Production lines, in addition to continually improving the is830 system as a whole.
In 2018, Ben was awarded Chartered Engineer status by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
ANDREW TSANG Development Engineer
Andrew joins us from Optimec, where he has been a key part of the R&D team since 2017, and involved closely in the development of the is830 range.
Customers of the is830 across the world will know Andrew for his work providing them with training and support.
After completing a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering/Mechatronics, Andrew is keen to utilise his skills to continue developing and improving Optimec’s range of instruments.
COLIN RICHARDS Consultant
Colin was the Director and owner of Optimec Limited from 2011 through to 2020.
He has travelled the world, visiting manufacturing facilities and meeting with leading members of the contact lens and IOL manufacturing industry. This has allowed him to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the industry and its metrology needs.
Colin’s passion and commitment to the business led him to make significant investments in the improvement of existing products and the development of new instrumentation. He raised the profile and branding of the company to a global market, and enabled metrology instrument design to keep pace with the demands of measuring complex lens designs.
We are delighted to have Colin as part of the Optimec Systems team. His professionalism, technical knowledge and dedication is invaluable, and will assist us in our ability to ensure we offer lens manufacturers the highest quality products and services to meet with their measurement requirements.
